Chatting With Justin: The Artists of Tennman Records

In 2007, Justin launched Tennman Records with Interscope Records. As CEO, he is intimately involved in the selection and signing of artists—as well as the production of their albums. Four artists are currently signed to Tennman—here Justin chats about what caught his eye about each.
On Esmee Denters
“Esmee is young and kinda funny because when she’s singing there is a piece of her that is wise beyond her years. And then when she stops singing you realize she is a young person. It’s interesting to me that somebody can posses a talent like that—and cover so much more than they’re aware of.
"Her talent is so far beyond even her. There’s a part of her that taps into her voice and it’s extraordinary—and the funny thing is, I think it’s almost unconscious. But she’s diligent, hard working, and incredibly sweet. And I feel like her big brother in a lot of ways.”

On Matt Morris
“Matt has been my friend since I was 11 years old. And we have a connection through music that is like nothing I have with anyone else on the planet. And we can go not seeing each other for 5-6 years and then sit down and write a song together and it would be something exceptional. He’s like a chameleon—his music ability, knowledge, and application. I would like to pride myself on being like that as well. And he has the sickest voice I’ve ever heard. Amazing songwriter. He likes to tell stories. He likes to influence consciousness.”

On Free Sol
“I’ve had more fun doing that project than anything because they are just fun. Good guys. Free’s a great rapper, Elliott a great‘s guitarist. Premo is a great on the keyboards, and Teddy is a great drummer. It’s a good group of guys that are good people too.
"With any act, it’s about spending time finding their specific voice. To have a rock band where the lead guy is a rapper, it takes a second to figure out how to make all of that happen. We spent some time getting specific with their identity. And their project has been the better for it. We have some special songs from it. They kick ass. The other thing about them is their stage presence. Their stage show is phenomenal. They’re seasoned far beyond what I ever could have imagined.”

On Bren
“Bren is one of the authentic artists to her music. She doesn’t try to be anything she’s not. And she happens to be a lot of things at the same time. She’s a great songwriter and she has an amazing voice. She’s very authentic to herself and I really appreciate that about her. Her project is going unreal. It’s going to stand out.”
