Armando Galarraga Robbed of Perfect Game on Final Out

It has to be the worst call in the history of baseball. With two outs in the ninth inning, one out away from perfection, little known Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga induced a weak ground ball to first base, and that was that. Except it wasn't. First base umpire Jim Joyce had called the runner safe for an infield single. The first baseman, Miguel Cabrera, actually started celebrating before realizing what had happened. And if you watch the replay, the runner, Jason Donald, actually puts his hands on his head because he also realized what had happened. Replays showed that Donald was clearly out, and Armando Galarraga should have been credited with a perfect game. Instead, it will go down as the most famous one-hit shutout of all time.
"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said afterward. "I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."
“I don’t blame them a bit for anything that was said. I would’ve said it myself if I had been Galarraga. I would’ve been the first person in my face, and he never said a word to me.”
This play will be talked about forever, you can count on it. And it may just be the impetus that leads -- finally -- to instant replay in baseball.

After the game, the umpire apologized to Galarraga, who handled it all with remarkable dignity and compassion. "Nobody's perfect," Galarraga said.
To us, and everyone who saw, Armando Galarraga was perfect. Record books be damned.
