We're sick and tired of the phrases typically used to describe Devendra Banhart: Neo-folk, avante-folk, freak folk, folk-hipster, world folk..The best we've heard yet is he is part of "new weird America," of which we are pretty sure even the weirdest folk in America don't know the meaning.
What we do know is we like the Texan/Venezelan gypsy songwriter's sun-blissed, lazy lo-fi track "Baby." (It's like The Black Lips' windows-rolled-down 2010 recessionistic response to Michael Jackson's "Girlfriend.")
What we like even better? Its mind-trippin' video in all its psychedelic, cavernous glory. It's like entering Wayne Coyne's psyche....there's babies floating in dreadlocks, dancing cameos from members MGMT and Amazing Baby, and tons of dancing weird cave critters that put Fraggles to shame. Um - and watch closely....we think the hallucination sequence is due to a pill getting wedged up where the sun don't shine...(courtesy of director/animator Ron Winter who did that creepy MGMT's "Kids" video that sent mommas everywhere in a tizzy.)
Bad-ass video indeed....
