Brooklyn's Pool Parties On The Brooklyn Waterfront Every Sunday Till Aug 29th

The Pool Parties, hosted by Jelly NYC, are a FREE summer NYC ritual that started inside the emptied pool basin of Brookyln's McCarren Park Pool, in which boys in short shorts play eerily competitive dodgeball, fashionistas lay in the sun drinking Brooklyn lager, and hundreds of young, hip, sweaty things enjoy music fresh off the Indie rock griddle. How famed are these festivities? If you just google "pool party," you'll see they're the first pool party listed.
However, since 2009, they've been relocated to the Brooklyn Waterfront, which turns out to be a bit romantic and yet a bit apocalyptic feeling. On one hand, you have an epic NY skyline across the bay. However, the stage is sandwiched in a barren yard/barely-there park, in between sterile, modern highrises the kind that scream "I don't belong to Brooklyn." At times, it feels kind of like you are on the edge of the world while the rest of the world is taking a siesta. But if you can get past that and bear the heat, The Pool Parties are yours to relish throughout the summer (Pool Party Schedule at bottom) every Sunday until August 29th for live music, premium crowd-watching and coconut water-imbibing. What better way to nurse your sunday hangover?
This Sunday, we were bummed we missed out on Fang Island and Why? (Shame on us, we were watching the World Cup along with the other 700 million viewers.) However, we caught Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu playing Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures (which was an experiment at best), as the clouds hung low, bloated with rain but thankfully too stubborn to release their pent-up angst. Hipsters eat tacos and checked out more hipsters. A guy dressed in a hot dog suit chased people around. Sweaty athletes hit each other with dodge balls over and over. Cigarettes were smoked, beers guzzled. Free Zico coconut water and Vitamin Water was given out (upgrades from last year). All in all, it's still a nice, carefree escape from the city.....with or without the pool.
