It's not an easy thing- being compared to "Jesus." The same goes with being called "messianic." A lot of weight comes with being compared and contrasted to prophets, kings and deities. It's enough to give someone a complex. Somehow however, Alex Ebert - the leader singer of the 10-part folk troupe Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros - seems to be handling the comparison (which he received quite a bit) pretty damn well. By the end of an average live show, he's got the audience eating out of his hands....Or in the case of his San Francisco Fillmore show (5/27/2010), he had them sitting on the floor of the concert venue (not one person remained standing), singing along lullaby-style. Impressive.

The whole band is impressive in their musicality - from robust trumpet cries, wistful lyrics, sweet harmonies. Given their infectious spirit, the whole floor quakes from the audience jumping around in exaltation. (How often does that happen in a live show these days?) However, the thing that makes Alex's message particularly special is there's depth to his spirited on-stage persona that goes beyond music. This is a dude who had a successful career in music as lead singer of successful major label band over a decade ago, but got caught up by drugs. For Alex to kick the habit, rebirth years later, gather together a troupe of talented musicians, and craft happy-go-lucky tunes that harken back to the free-wheeling 60s, is impressive. To make hundreds of people jump up, forget their worries, and smile for 2 hours straight at each live show, is extraordinary.

The bottom line is it doesn't matter that Alex is neither Jesus nor the messiah. If anything, that's a dumb comparison. Truth is, Alex is as human as they come. He shakes the hand of any audience member who extends theirs. He and his merry crew makes you want to go barefoot and dance in the daisies for a while...makes you want to celebrate life.... And that, my friends, is an unforgettably beautiful thing.
See them live when you can.....a must-see.

Fan love.

PS We've got a special video interview with the band coming. In the meantime, here's a song to kick off the weekend. The official, recently released video for "Home:" This romantic anthem had the crowd in stitches, causing the floor shake as the whole audience jumped, clapped, whistled, sang along, and frolicked to the beat. Under the dim lights of the historic Fillmore, magic was in the air. Not a worry in sight.
