Justin played a stellar round of golf at the U.S. Open Challenge hosted by Golf Digest on June 12th. While it started out a rainy, dreary day at Beth Page, the sun peaked in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Justin kept good form and spirit throughout (hell, he's been golfing almost as long as he's been singing - since 10 years old.)
Who else was there? Former NBA star Michael Jordan, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Golf Digest contest winner Larry Giebelhausen (lucky guy). Check these candids below.
Justin putting with his caddy Anthony Kim, PGA golfer whose b-day is today June 19th. Happy 24th Anthony!
Four...?
Justin's mom and pop, Lynn and Paul, who walked the course with Justin that day.
(Seen as this Golf challenge will be airing on TV on Father's day, we suggested a couple golf-friendly Pop present ideas.)
Trailing the course....The Black Course has a 7,426-yard layout, which equates to the second longest in U.S. Open history. Plus, it's got three par fours that are more than 500 yards.
In other words, it ain't easy...
Ever heard the old Scottish saying “Drive for show — putt for the dough?"
Dude looks enthusiastic?
Pimpin' the prizes
The Whole Crew. including Jordan in Green and Roethlisberger in dark blue.
Proud momma Lynn.
This was the second year of the Golf Digest Challenge, which began after Tiger Woods and other pro golfers boasted that an average golfer couldn’t break 100 on a U.S. Open golf course under U.S. Open conditions.
The end results?
Roethlisberger ended at 11-over 81, Jordan shot 86, Timberlake shot 88, and Giebelhausen shot 101.
___ PS: FUN SNACK IDEA?
What do you do when you're watching golf, your stomach is growling so loud it is distracting the game, and you're 3 miles from the clubhouse? We've got a comedic little trick for you that will gain you friends on the green and ameliorate your hunger.
This green-briefcase-picnic matches the stuff around you, but saves you from making a mess on the real green. (Thanks Paige Russell for this design idea).
Instructions below:
What you need:
1. An old briefcase or any kind of case really, preferably one that’s molded plastic so you don’t have to worry about lining it for watering the grass
2. piece of turf cut to size
3. spray adhesive
4. thin ice pack
5. golf course scene printed out to size (or something nature-esque like it)
6. cutlery (either standard stainless, fancy silver, or something biodegradable like these WüN guys by Aspenware)
7. a napkin
8. a traditional picnic style plate for nostalgia’s sake and some yummy food bits
How to do:
1. Find a briefcase you want to use (Best is vintage WITH a handle, and measure the dimensions of the inside bottom where the grass will go.
2. Call a local supplier of turf and see if they will sell you just that tiny amount. (They are afforable lil lumps. Paige paid $3 for hers.)
3. Set the turf outside on a plastic bag and give it a drink of water. You also might want to run your fingers through it to get the blades standing up and sprite.
4. Next, measure the inside of the case’s lid to get the dimensions for the foam core you”ll need to mount your nature scene on. (You should try to make it match the golf green).
5. Use your spray adhesive to mount your nature scene onto the board.
6. Now you’re ready to green up that case. Take your turf and place it in the bottom space. Voila, instant outdoors.
7. Before you pack your picnic, take the ice sheet out of the freezer and slide it either behind the pockets (as pictured below) or into the largest pocket, if it will fit. This ice, combined with the cooling / insulating powers of the grass, should keep your lunch fresh. (Although I wouldn’t recommend risking sashimi…)
Now you be stylin'!
