Fairytale Reality Bites

In these days of Photoshop, it's hard to discern reality from fantasy. In reaction, West coast photographer, Dina Goldstein is taking your childhood fairytales and giving them a stiff dose of realism. In her photo project, “Fallen Princesses”, Goldstein unravels the mystique behind classic Disney princesses and proposes a different kind of ending-- one that is anything but “happily ever after.” Check it:

Snow White may get her prince, but she also gets knocked up with four of his ‘lil’ brats’.

Belle battles a new beast, Age, with a painful dose of plastic surgery.

Sleeping Beauty ends up in retirement home...with her Prince?
This may strike you as embittered work, until you learn that the project was inspired by Goldstein’s experience as a mother, and hence, role model for her children. After witnessing the fascination that young girls have with Disney movies and their predictably unblemished heroines, Goldstein thought that these old fashioned fables needed some debunking. (After all, who's more heroic? A mis-proportioned rosy-cheeked cartoon? Or the woman who birthed and burped you!?)

“ Love love LOVE it. funny enough my friend and I wrote a couple of blogs on this very thing... but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words...she nailed it! ”
“ this is negative thinking...you should be thinking positively ...these pics are reality, but you can make reality to become fun...it's part of life ...kids are fun...plastic surgery ? if need to...retirement home ? not everybody ends up there if they know how to save money for retirement :) ”
“ fuck all that - no fucking way - i dont do the brady bunch - go ahead say i am selfish - at least i am honest - ”
“ "happily ever after" is a marketing gimmick to emphasize on customer satisfaction with products/services! =) and fairy tales are mere products for children, and we have to wake up to the world of reality..~ ”
“ the fairytales that we all know, were changed by the brothers Grimm and disney for childrens, cauze they were only meant to be heard by grown ups. And they was no happy endings. They were stories over drugs, sex, rape, death, ..... ”
“ I grew up Disney very, my father was a Animator for 40 years besides having a fear of erasers, I had to find out the hard way the 'Happy Ever After " is a tag line not a outcome. ”
“ Hey there is nothing wrong with a bit of dreaming and fantasy, we see enough realism on the news everyday! ”
“ Brad and Angelina have all those kids because they wanted them, I hope. Snow White shouldn't have had all those kids if she didn't want them. Belle fell in love with a beast and he should love her no matter what she looks like, too. Sleeping Beauty should be awake because the Prince kissed her already. I guess I just don't agree with what these picks are trying to say. So, whatever. Fairy tales are possible and we shouldn't loose our child like wonder. ”
“ Absolutely brilliant. This is what they never tell us about the fary tale story when we are kids. Our imagination goes along with the movie but when the movie stops, our imagination stops with it and you never get to see what really happens after you finally got your beautiful prince charming... Well... you will spend pretty much time trying to find him in real life, this just makes the searching shorter :D thanks!! Great photographer, very original. ”
