Do you know what Baile Funk means?!? If you're a clubber in Rio, you probably do. But for the rest of the world whose virgin eyes have not witnessed the hot n' heavy Baile Funk scene, the world-travelled Diplo has opened that door. In collab with Brazilian creative director Leandro HBL, the dynamic duo have crafted an eye-opening documentary called "Favela On Blast", an inside look at Rio's fervent underground dance parties in Rio's favelas (favela is a term for Brazil's shanty towns).
"Favela On Blast" trails resident DJ Marlboro, one of the originators of the Funk Scene, who embraces the nitty-gritty street culture that the bailes represent (bailes, BTW, are a form of dance that originated from the Flamenco in the mid 1900s). The dance parties erupted in Rio's poor neighborhoods in the '60s and continue to play a huge role in the favela's culture and identity.
Check out the official trailor for the movie, which was released on DVD on July 20 from Mad Decent.
