Gorillaz New Video Sets Records

So, at what point do we stop referring to Gorillaz as "Blur frontman Damon Albar's side project" and give this band its propers? After all, according to Rolling Stone, the first two Gorillaz albums have outsold Blur's entire catalogue here in the US. That's right. And with the release of their newest album "Plastic Beach," it doesn't look like Gorillaz is slowing down. The album is pretty remarkable, riding sparkling production and its damn-cool cartoon visuals to the forefront of interactive musical relevance.
Better yet, in the video for their new single, "Stylo," Bruce Willis makes a cameo, toting a Smith & Wesson and a snarl, and kicks some cartoon outlaw butt. The song features guest appearances by Mos Def and Bobby Womack.
Need we mention, the video has set viewership records for music video premieres on YouTube (to the tune of 900,000 hits in its first 24 hours), leapfrogging previous records set by U2 and Weezer.
But it's not all dusty trails and bad-assery. De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, and Lou Reed get playful in their turns on the album. And the sleeper hit, called "On Melancholy Hill," is rather sweet. Its lilting, dream-sequence melody will make you want to jump into the ocean and explode into a million dandelion seeds.
Gorillaz' frontman Damon Albar's side project Blur played some reunion shows last summer, but it was back to business for Albar. And his business is now, let's face it, being the frontman of Gorillaz.
