Mavericks Surf Contest Wipe-Out

Mavericks is a world-renown surf point south of San Francisco where the waves can reach up to 15 to 20 feet. On a good day, it looks something like this:

However, this weekend, Feb 13th, 2010, when the annual Mavericks Big Wave Competition took place, the crowd got to know first hand the indiscriminate force of the waves. Instead of simply watching the surfers battle the relentless waves, the spectators themselves were wiped-out by one big one that hit the shore, knocking over the contest stands and dragging some back out to sea. Luckily, only several people had injuries and none were too serious. But it sure made everyone appreciate mother nature's finest...
Out of the 24 vying for winner, the one who took home the purse of $150,000 was South African, Chris Bertish. Second and third place winners were both from Santa Cruz, second place went to Shane Desmond while third place went to Anthony Tashnick. The waves maxed out that day at 25 feet the competitors said.
