In Memphis over the weekend for the Mirimichi golf course opening, DJ's Efeezy and Devin Steele put it down on Saturday. We discovered an interesting crop of dance-driven singles this summer. But it's not only the established superstars, there's also several new artists making some pretty significant noise. Take a listen and let us know what you think:
First up, Gyft and his anthem "They Just Don't Know". Borrowing a sample from the great Earl King (one of the most important figures in New Orleans' rich music history penning "Come On" and Professor Longhair's "Big Chief") Gyft's song is pure summer heat.
Yo "Hard White Bricks" Gotti, has been putting out some of the best music on the Memphis rap scene for years. This summer, Gotti may have another hit on hands with "5 Star Chick" rhyming the qualities that everyman wants in his boo.
You know how, when you go to the club and you want to dance, but that big roll of $100's in your pocket won't let you move? I know I can't dance with a bunch of paper in my pockets! Leave it to an artist named Tha Bank to solve that problem. If you go to the clubs with five stacks or more stuffed in your pockets, "Money Walk" is the dance for you (me).
The Memphis youth movement won't be outdone. Lil Lody's T-Pain inspired pop track, "Throw Dem 2's" brings it. Only 18-years-old, producing his own tracks, rapping and singing -- sounds like there's plenty of upside. We will be keeping an ear out.
Lastly, "It's not a dance, it's a swag" - 17-year-old Memphis-born, Bay Area-bred rapper E.P. returns to the M to drop "Paper Chase". Search around Youtube a bit, Paper Chase is on it's way to being bigger than the Macarena and the double dutch bus.

“ Any one of these demonstrates why you are key to the Memphis music scene. I'm in Green Bay, WI and these would play here, not on the radio, but at parties and clubs. ”
