Just as the Summer Festival season ramps down, Outside Lands touched down on San Francisco's own little forest, Golden Gate Park, for the third year in a row. This year, the biggest music festival in San Francisco was predicted to be significantly parred down in terms of size and temperament (i.e. it was cut to 2 days long rather than 3, there were less stages, the tickets were cheaper, and the headliners less buzz-worthy.) Indeed, on Saturday, there appeared to be significantly less than crowd capacity of 60,000 people. Regardless, Outside Lands still hit the spot for a laid-back day in the park.
Some favorite musical acts of the day? Gypsy punksters Gogol Bordello got the crowd revved up early......Australia's hard rocking Wolfmother did a wicked cover of The Doors' Riders From The Storm.....and Wild Beasts surprised the crowd traveling early to The Strokes with melodic, bewitching synth-filled undulations (If you haven't heard of them before, listen to "We Still Got The Taste Dancing On Our Tongues.") DJ Bassnectar garnished the crowd with his distinctive slick, dirty bass-heavy beats - until his sound went out for a good 10 minutes. The SF crowd being as laid back and non-violent as possible (We'd hate to imagine what would happen if the sound went out in the 100 degree heat at Lollapalooza...) And finally, The Strokes proved that they have not only retained their steamy sex appeal since their debut, they sound BETTER than they did touring in 2001 when they took the world by storm with "Is This It?" Also, for the manifold appreciators of The Grateful Dead, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh performed on the main stage into the night - having rebranded themselves as the outfit Further. A little rock, a little roll, a little liquid guitar jam, a whole lotta San Francisco soul.
