Style in Berlin

Since Berlin is one of the last “affordable” European cities (in that you can still find livable rooms in Friedrichshain- Berlin’s old squatter district turned scenester playground- for under 400EUR a month), it's home to many young, bohemian international artists. This week, Berlin is bursting with wicked yet unpretentious street style - as seen this week outside the tent of Berlin's Fashion Week and at The Bread and Butter Tradeshow, where Justin and Trace exhibited their William Rast line on July 1st.

We attribute the smart fashion to the many creatives of Berlin who are breaking down new walls these days - in art, music, and fashion (i.e. in graffiti, avante-garde techno, u name it.) Inspired, we’ve handpicked some note-worthy Berlin designers below. Danke Vielmals Berliners!

Wood Wood

Wood Wood is one of Berlin’s most reputable and established streetwear labels.  Founded in 2002 by three former design students from Royal Design School of Denmark, Wood Wood’s designs have evolved from T-shirts to a sassy streetwear line-- making their boutique in the trendy Mitte section of Berlin an urban fashion hub.

PSST: In case you won’t be visiting Berlin anytime soon, you can shop Wood Wood online here where you can pick up clothes and stuff like this:

Julia and Ben

Berlin-based duo Julia and Ben met at ESMOD and started designing in a Berlin Mitte gallery shortly thereafter.  The result is futuristic pieces with urban rocker roots with experimental flourishes.  Their F/W 09/10 collections for men and women, “An Answer Becomes Slow And I Am Sad,” continue to play with dyes, texture and sheerness. Ever Berliners, their clothing is hard to find outside of their boutique, JB Space-- but you can get a better look at designs on JB’s myspace.

Common People

The super-popular fashion blog Stil In Berlin is hosting a fashion show on July 5th called “Common People”, which pays well-heeled, ecclectic homage to street-style blogs and the fashionable “everyman.”  The July 5th show will send 20 of Berlin’s most stylish residents down the runway- while including live performance by Kinky WhiteHorse. And unlike other Fashion Week runway shows, you can RSVP on facebook.  How refreshingly friendly...

Common People? The Bohemians of Berlin

PSSST: The blog, Stil In Berlin, which has been documenting the distinct style of Berliners since 2006, (because "fashion can describe what a city is,") has been delivering inspirational snaps of industry eye-candy,  like this one of a flapper-inspired Lena Hoschek. Also notable? The Berlin Vintage Guide (man if only every city had this online guide it would save hours of random alley wandering!)
