The Roots And John Legend Bring The Fire

Next time you're having a bad day and struggling to keep your chin up, think about the poor characters in the new video from The Roots and John Legend for "The Fire". This mini-movie was created by director Rik Cordero, who used the amazing ode to survival and determination as inspiration.

The ritualistic executions in the video make us think of this as a five-minute, even-more-sadistic-take on Inglourious Basterds - only minus Nazis, plus cannibalism, plus vomiting. Yes, it's hardcore, so we advise against watching this if you're of a sensitive disposition or easily offended:

Beautifully shot, but très disturbing, isn't it? We're desperate to know what was in that box!

"The Fire" is taken from The Roots' immense new album, How I Got Over (available now through Def Jam), and we can't recommend it highly enough.

The fun doesn't stop there though, because John Legend and The Roots have an album - titled Wake Up! - coming out September 21st, through Columbia Records.

We love that, nine studio albums in, The Roots are still challenging us. Here's praying for a tour soon.

“ ...You don't say "Good luck", you say "Don't give up", it's the fire, inside ya, let it burn... Yeah, and if I'm ever at the crossroads and start feelin' mixed signals like Morse code, my soul start to grow colder than the North Pole, I try to focus on the holder where the torch goes...I realize I'm supposed to reach for the skies, never let anyone tell you otherwise... There's something in your heart, and it's in your eyes, it's the fire, inside ya. Let it burn...You don't say "Good luck", you say, "Don't give up", it's the fire, inside ya, let it burn...One love, one game, one desire. One flame, one caught fire, let it burn higher. I never show signs of fatigue, but you're tired. Cuz I'm the definition of tragedy turned triumph. It's David and Goliath, I made it to the eye of the storm, feeling tall, like they fed me to the lions...I show 'em how to grind down like a science. It sounds like a riot, uh-huh it's so quiet, the only sound I hear is my heart, the highest victory is what I came to take...You came to celebrate, I came to cerebrate. Really inspiring lyrics... ”

“ Wow. What a real video? I just love things like this that open the eyes of ordinary humans. ”
