The Utopian Art of Patrick Winfield
One word to describe Patrick Winfield's work? kaleidoscopic. His dizzying collages depict the surreal in a frenetic mishmash of symbols and disembodied bits. Yet, instead of bordering on the grotesque, the Frankenstein art has a vibrance all its own, thanks to the eye-popping colors and the unconventional composition that Winfield uses.
The brain behind the art?
While one may think collage implies a quick cut-and-paste method, Winfield's process is complex. While the upstate New York native, who works as a graphic designer, started off creating collage, he eventually started photographing the pieces on polaroid film. While experimenting with working polaroids into grids and composites, he ended up building more and more layers of his film collage. After a while he switched to photograms (hence the grid format) and now produces art on both mediums.
What inspires this visionary?
He says:
Everything.
Life.
Death.
And all the stars in between.
