It is hard to picture Einstein’s family. The idea of him having similarly electric-haired siblings, i.e. a golden gene pool of genius, just seems kind of ridiculously unfair. In the same sense, it made our brains ache a little bit to suddenly have it brought to our attention that the untouchable Radiohead genius, Thom Yorke not only has a family but in particular an awesome younger brother named Andy, who we've never heard about.
“What?! There’s more than one of them?! How did that happen?! What do they do at Christmas?! Will the world implode if they perform at the same time?!”
Well, no, actually. Because Thom and Andy – also an accomplished musician in his own right (for the band Unbelievable Truth among other things) – have done just that and collaborated on a Mark Mulcahy (ex-frontman of Miracle Legion and esteemed solo artist) cover, titled “All For The Best”, as part of a tribute album titled Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs Of Mark Mulcahy (out September 29, through Shout Factory Records). Witness the uncomfortable, eerie brilliance in this Rolling Stone exclusive:
The album also features the impressive likes of Dinosaur Jr, The National, REM's Michael Stipe and (one time Lemonheads member) Juliana Hatfield. In case you’re wondering, the original, rather Joy Division-centric, Miracle Legion version of “All For The Best” sounded like this:
And, yes, while clearly Mulcahy wrote the thing originally, we feel like Thom and Andy bring a depth to it that is just outright, face-slappingly beautiful.
So, you see, there's a whole pile of stuff to keep you amused while you're waiting for the follow up to Radiohead's In Rainbows. Feel free to delve into the worlds of Andy Yorke and Mark Mulcahy in the meantime. We promise you won't be disappointed.
