Watercolor Is In: Stina Persson's Groovy Artwork

We recently posted an article about Women in Art to showcase the work of four contemporary artists and their take on timeless feminine beauty. Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, Stina Persson is another mastermind portraitist.

Best known worldwide for her distinguished watercolor techniques, she creates sultry, glamourous fashion illustrations that we love for their simplicity and emotional appeal.

After studying fine art in Perugia, fashion drawing in Florence, and illustration at the Pratt Institute in New York, Persson returned to her native Sweden to live and work.

She is part of a rare, successful breed of contemporary artist who not only show (and sell) in major galleries, but also license their cool-as-hell artwork to major international brands.

Looking for a stylish ride down your favorite mountain? The piece above adorns an eco-friendly snowboard by Arbor Eden.

Some of Persson's illustrations looks super retro and seem like they could come straight out of an Austin Powers flick.

Others are monochrome, peaceful, inspiring - like this one below.

Her artist statement is all about “finding the right balance between the edgy and the elegant, the raw and the beautiful.”

Her use of ceremonial Mexican cut paper is whimsical, yet sophisticated.

Other mediums of choice include acrylic and ink, which make for bold, edgier pieces such as these:

What can we say? She's simply fabulous...

In terms of subject matter, the piece below totally reminded us of Roy Lichtenstein's famous M-Maybe illustration, produced back in 1965.

Persson's photo-incorporated work has graced the pages of magazines such as Vogue Nippon, Harper's Bazaar, Flaunt, Elle UK, Marie Claire, Madame, Madame Figaro, Nylon Magazine and Squint.

Ya dig?

“My question to you is that why do you mess with white girls when you yourself aren't completely white?”

“Your voice sounds so sexy in this absolutely fresh song!”

Never Again

“I really like you doing pure pop music like this song, but the problem with it is that it encourages the white culture and wants it to be exclusive to you and Britney, etc. etc. You stayed away from that sin in your second solo album and it is easier for someone like me to look at you as an artist and a friend now. I am just saying that I want pop culture to be inclusive and you have done a lot towards that end.”
