You may know Krumpin', Jerking, Popping and Locking. But do you know TURF dancing? Having started in the inner cities of Oakland, CA, TURF dancing stands for “Taking Up Room on the Floor." It will MOVE you. Check it out:
(NOTE: the dancing ramps up 30 seconds in.)
This film by YAKfilms, “Dancing in the Rain,” filmed on MacArthur and 90th Street in Oakland, is particularly powerful demonstration. Shot on a damp, cold, gray day, contrasted with a slow synthetic beat, it's a grizzly and heart-breaking. Especially when you realize they're dancing in memory and honor of the recently deceased brother of one of the dancers, (D Real, the one in the white shirt) - who was killed in a car accident on that very corner.
