WHEW! NJ Nets Avoid NBA Worst Record

“We got 10,” the public address announcer Gary Sussman said as the final buzzer sounded. “The Nets win. The Nets wiiiiiiiiiin.”

It took 74 games, but the New Jersey Nets finally notched their 10th win of the season, and avoided the inauspicious distinction of owning the NBA record for futility, held [still] by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, who went 9-73 (that's 9 wins, and 73 losses). Ouch.
San Antonio had a chance to tie with 12.2 seconds left, when the normally reliable Tim Duncan threw the ball out of bounds.
"Tim threw it straight out of bounds," Courtney Lee said. "So, I did a ‘Jersey Shore' fist pump." Terrence Williams (above) joined him -- as did some folks down at the actual Jersey shore, I'd imagine...
Others remained more tempered. "We don't want to be a part of the worst team in history, so it's exciting to get 10 wins, but it is 10 wins, you know what I mean?" point guard Devin Harris said.
