With the US on the brink of elimination, Landon Donovan scored the goal of his life on Wednesday, with a rebound shot in stoppage time that propelled Team USA to a 1-0 victory over Algeria. His goal made the US winners of Group C -- the first time the United States has won their World Cup group since the inaugural World Cup tournament in 1930. More importantly, it sends Donovan and his teammates to the round of 16.
This goal erases what has been a frustrating opening round for Team USA, with a goal disallowed in their game against Slovenia, and then another earlier in this game against Algeria -- also for no apparent reason. But the US was resilient, and managed to rescue their tournament lives with a quick counterattack that seemed to catch the Algerians off guard. Goalie Tim Howard's throw started it all, which found Donovan streaking down the right side, who poked a lead pass to Altidore, who crossed to Dempsey; Dempsey's shot was turned away, but Donovan, who never gave up on the play, was there for the putback.
Some are already saying Donovan has singlehandedly resuced American soccer. Think about it: if the US had been unjustly eliminated because of disallowed goals in two seperate games -- both of which would have sent them into the next round -- the backlash in this country against a sport, which held tenuous ground to begin with, might have been irreparable. Instead, we continue to root for Landon Donovan and his mates, because their uniforms bear the colors of our nation, in the biggest sporting event in the world.
